Author Guidelines

We invite authors to submit manuscripts to the journal Scientific Studies of Crime and Punishment. All submissions will first be evaluated by the editor for compliance with the aims and scope of the journal. Manuscripts deemed suitable will be sent for peer review, after which a decision on acceptance or rejection will be made.
Before submitting a manuscript, authors must obtain permission to publish any elements included in the material, such as photographs, documents, and data. All authors listed in the submitted manuscript must consent to being named as authors. Where required, research must be approved by the relevant department (centre) or other body in accordance with the legislation of the country in which the research is conducted or the rules of the institution employing the authors.
Article Requirements.
Manuscripts are submitted to the editorial office by e-mail (scripjournal@yandex.ru) or via the journal’s online submission form. The article file must be in Microsoft Word format (.doc, .docx).
1.1. The length of a full-length scholarly article should be 20,000–40,000 characters with spaces. For research notes, reviews, book reviews, and literature surveys, deviations from these limits are permitted by arrangement with the editorial office (minimum 12,000; maximum 60,000 characters).
1.2. Manuscript format. The text must be typed in Times New Roman, 14 pt, with single line spacing. Margins on all sides of the page must be 2 cm. Emphasis within the text may be indicated only by italics or bold type.
1.3. The file uploaded via the manuscript submission form must contain all information required for publication (including figures and tables).
2. Manuscript structure must conform to the template below (subject to variation depending on the type of work).
   2.1. Russian-language abstract.
 Author details. Full given name, patronymic (if applicable), and surname must be provided. Next, the official position with the FULL name of the institution must be given. After the name of the institution, the city and country must be indicated, separated by a comma. If authors from different institutions contributed to the manuscript, the institution names and author names must be correlated by adding superscript numerals before the institution names and after the names of the corresponding authors. Next, the author’s e-mail and personal identification codes (SPIN code (for details, see: http://elibrary.ru/projects/science_index/author_tutorial.asp); ORCID (for details, see: http://orcid.org/)) must be provided.
  Article title. It should be concise (preferably no more than 10 words). The use of abbreviations is not recommended.
 Abstract. The abstract must be a self-contained, complete part of the text containing the following structural elements: “Relevance”, “Aim”, “Methods”, and “Results”. The length of the abstract should be 100–250 words.
 Keywords. 5–10 keywords facilitating article indexing in search engines must be provided. Keywords must correspond pairwise in Russian and English.
   2.2. English-language abstract.
   The same sequence of information must be provided in English.
   2.3. Full text must be structured into sections: “Introduction” (relevance and rationale of the topic, literature and source review, research base, number of cases examined, methods of inquiry used, aims and objectives of the research), “Main Content” or “Discussion” (may be replaced by subheadings), “Conclusion” or “Findings” (summarising the author’s own research, briefly reporting the results and assessing their significance).
  2.4. Additional information (in Russian and English).   Conflict of interest statement. Authors must disclose potential and actual conflicts of interest related to the manuscript. A conflict of interest may be any situation (financial relationships, employment or service in institutions with a financial or political interest in the published material, official duties, etc.) capable of influencing the author of the manuscript and leading to concealment, distortion of data, or alteration of their interpretation. The existence of a conflict of interest on the part of one or more authors is NOT grounds for refusing to publish the article. Concealment of potential and actual conflicts of interest by authors, as identified by the editorial office, may result in refusal to consider and publish the manuscript.   Acknowledgements. Authors may express gratitude to individuals and organisations that facilitated publication of the article in the journal but are not its authors.   Funding information. Authors are required to indicate the source of funding for both the research itself and the article publication process. The source may be a grant fund, a commercial or state organisation, a university, or a private individual. Exact amounts or grant numbers need not be indicated. If the research and publication were not sponsored, the author must state this by writing: “No financial support” (or “The work was carried out without financial sponsorship”).   Information on each author’s contribution (and on persons listed in the “Acknowledgements” section).   2.5. List of references.   Sources are arranged in alphabetical order.
   A minimum of 15 cited scholarly sources is recommended. At least 30 % of sources must have been published within the last 5 years. Priority should be given to peer-reviewed journals, monographs, and conference proceedings indexed in RSCI/RSCI Core. References to textbooks are not permitted.   Regulatory legal acts and official documents must not be included in this section.   Self-citation should be avoided except where it is necessary.
   All sources in the list of references must be formatted in accordance with GOST R 7.0.100–2018.
 2.6. References.
The list of sources in References must correspond exactly to that in the List of references. Unlike the List of references, Russian-language sources in References must be given in their Latin-script equivalent – they must be written in the Roman alphabet.
   2.7. Contact information.   The contact information of ALL AUTHORS must be provided sequentially. The section must contain the following data for each author:   - Full name;   - Academic degree, academic title, position, structural unit, and full official name of the organisation (primary place of employment);
  - Work postal address (with postcode and country), e-mail address, work telephone number (with city code), mobile telephone number (required for prompt communication with the author; it will not be published in the manuscript or disclosed to third parties);
   - ORCID identifier (for details, see: http://orcid.org/), eLibrary SPIN code (for details, see: http://elibrary.ru/projects/science_index/author_tutorial.asp).
3. Abbreviations. All abbreviations and symbols used must be spelled out in parentheses upon first mention.
4. Footnote formatting rules.
   The journal employs a differentiated system of reference formatting depending on the source type:   4.1. Scholarly literature (journal articles, monographs, dissertations, preprints). Citations are formatted as in-text references. In the manuscript text, the serial number of the source from the “List of references” and the page number are given in square brackets (for example: [1, p. 25]). If a reference is made to several sources, they are separated by a semicolon: [3, p. 10; 5, p. 112]. The use of footnotes for scholarly literature is not permitted.
   4.2. Regulatory legal acts, case law, archival documents, and newspaper articles. These sources are formatted as page (bottom) notes with continuous numbering throughout the article text. They are not included in the “List of references” or “References”.   4.3. Authorial explanations. Authorial comments and clarifications are formatted as bottom notes.   4.4. Technical requirements. The reference in the text (number in brackets) must strictly correspond to the serial number of the source in the “List of references”. All sources in the list must be formatted in accordance with GOST R 7.0.100–2018.
5. Article submission. By submitting a manuscript to the editorial office for consideration, authors guarantee compliance with the following requirements:
Compliance with ethical principles.
 Absence of duplicate publications and “salami” or multiple submissions. Authors guarantee that the submitted article has not been published in whole or in part previously and is not under consideration by another publication. In the case of prior preprint posting or prior rejection of the manuscript by another editorial office, the author is obliged to notify the editorial office of this in the cover letter. Concealment of such facts is regarded as a violation of publication ethics and results in rejection of the material.   Validity of research results. Authors are obliged to provide objective and reliable data from empirical research. Submission of false or fabricated data is grounds for unconditional rejection of the manuscript.   Text originality and plagiarism check. Manuscripts undergo mandatory screening in the “Antiplagiat” system (URL: https://antiplagiat.ru/). Authors are advised that only the main body of the article is subject to originality checking; author details, abstracts, keywords, and the list of references (References) are not taken into account when calculating the final originality score. The editorial office does not rely exclusively on automated metrics: every report is subject to expert verification to distinguish plagiarism from legitimate citation (including references to regulatory legal acts, case law, and established legal terminology).   The following requirements are established:
   1) Original authorial text: not less than 75 %.
   2) Legitimate citation (including regulatory acts and scholarly works): up to 20
   3) Legitimate self-citation (use of fragments from the author’s own previously published texts): no more than 10–15 %.
   4) Illegitimate borrowings (plagiarism, including translated plagiarism and paraphrasing without attribution): 0 %.
   If plagiarism is detected or the established requirements are violated, the manuscript will be rejected.   Correct manuscript format: Microsoft Word – .doc, .docx. The manuscript must comply with all editorial office formatting requirements and be formatted in accordance with the editorial office’s instructions.
